Webasto opens new production line for
high-tech glass in Luxembourg
Grevenmacher – September 23, 2024 – Webasto Luxembourg has successfully launched the new high-tech glass production line at its plant in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg. The official opening ceremony on September 21 was also attended by Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy, SME, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, and Luxembourg's Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden. The world leader for roof systems is investing in a customized glass production line to significantly increase the plant's production capacity for roof glazing. The strategic product focus here is on large-format panoramic glass roofs and pioneering technologies such as switchable glazing and ambient lighting.
The expansion of production capacity includes the addition of approximately 13,000 square meters of manufacturing space and the integration of state-of-the-art technologies. The new facilities not only increase production efficiency and capacity, but also enable significant energy savings. Webasto is using this opportunity to further modernize production and to manufacture larger glass roof systems for passenger cars of the highest quality.
Another key element of this investment is the installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof of the plant, which has an output of 4.5 megawatts peak (MWp) and produces approximately 3.95 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually. This is enough to meet the needs of about 1,000 households. With a surface area of around 20,000 square meters – the equivalent of three soccer fields – the system makes a significant contribution to reducing electricity consumption and increasing energy efficiency.
“By investing in one of the world's most modern production lines for high-tech glass, Webasto is further expanding its innovative strength in the field of roof systems,” explains Jan Henning Mehlfeldt, Member of the Management Board at Webasto. “Our plant in Grevenmacher is now optimally positioned to meet the growing demand for roof systems with high-tech glass in the automotive industry.”
The investment in the site will create over 60 new jobs. The production facility in Grevenmacher, which has existed since 1992 and has been part of the Webasto Group since 2022, is thus continuing its successful development and positioning itself as a competence center for glass within the company.
